A Solo Traveler’s Week in Vietnam: Discovering the Highlights of Hanoi, Hoi An, Halong Bay, and Ninh Binh
As a solo traveller, I recently embarked on a week-long journey to explore some of the top destinations in Vietnam, and it was an experience that exceeded all my expectations. From the bustling capital city of Hanoi to the serene landscapes of Halong Bay and Ninh Binh, Vietnam offered a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that captivated me throughout my trip.
My journey began in Hanoi, where the city’s energy and vibrancy immediately struck me. I spent my days wandering through the winding streets of the Old Quarter, marvelling at the well-preserved ancient architecture and immersing myself in the local culture. Visiting historical sites like the Temple of Literature and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum was a humbling experience, as I learned about Vietnam’s rich history and the legacy of its founding fathers.
One of the highlights of my time in Hanoi was the food scene. I indulged in delicious street food like pho, banh mi, and egg coffee, and even took a cooking class to learn how to make these classic dishes myself. The lively atmosphere around Hoan Kiem Lake and Ta Hien “Beer Street” was perfect for mingling with locals and fellow travellers.
I embarked on a cruise from Hanoi through the stunning Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its thousands of limestone islands jutting from emerald waters. Sailing past these breathtaking landscapes was a surreal experience, and I had the chance to explore some of the caves, go kayaking, and even try squid fishing.
My next stop was the charming town of Hoi An, which quickly became one of my favourite destinations in Vietnam. Hoi An was a perfect place to relax and immerse myself in the local culture with its well-preserved ancient architecture, colourful lanterns, and laid-back atmosphere. I spent hours wandering through the picturesque old town, shopping for local handicrafts and tailor-made clothing, and indulging in delicious seafood dishes.
One of the highlights of my time in Hoi An was taking a cooking class, where I learned how to make classic Vietnamese dishes like spring rolls and banh mi. It was a hands-on way to connect with the local cuisine and culture, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the complexity and flavours of Vietnamese cooking.
My final stop was Ninh Binh, a lesser-known gem often referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land.” This rural province offered a perfect counterpoint to the bustle of Hanoi, with its stunning karst landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. I took a boat trip through the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explored the ancient capital of Hoa Lu. I also did a walking tour of a village named Lan Ha, which added a unique local perspective to my visit. The serene beauty of Ninh Binh was a perfect way to end my journey and reflect on all that I had experienced during my week in Vietnam.
As a solo traveller, I found Vietnam to be an incredibly welcoming and safe destination. The people were friendly and helpful, and I always felt supported during my trip. I met many fellow travellers along the way, and we shared stories and experiences that enriched my journey even further.
Overall, my week in Vietnam was a whirlwind of new experiences, flavours, and insights. Vietnam has so much to offer from the bustling cities to the serene natural landscapes. I deeply appreciated the country’s rich history, warm hospitality, and delicious food. I can’t wait to return and explore more of this fascinating destination, and I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to visit to do so. Vietnam is a country that will capture your heart and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
